This reprint aims to investigate some of the numerous ways in which Christianity venerated and represented the Virgin Mary in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Fifteen researchers in various areas of the Arts and Humanities have brought together here their efforts to address in part this inexhaustible objective. The reprint is divided into two main parts. In one of them, composed of six chapters, we study some of the several ways in which the Christian faithful rendered worship and devotion to the Virgin Mary during the more than one thousand years under consideration. The other part, made up of seven chapters, analyzes various iconographic manifestations through which medieval and Renaissance Christians made their devotion to the mother of Christ visible in pictorial or sculptural forms. Therefore, this reprint will be very useful not only for specialists in Christian studies, especially in Marian themes but also for those interested in the development of the societies and cultures of medieval and Renaissance Europe.

The cult around the holiness and the relics of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal is a remarkable phenomenon, not only in the field of religion, but in the artistic, literary, social and political ones as well. Elizabeth or Isabel of Aragon was a most remarkable person in her time and the cult around her holiness and her relics would know a continuing and unstoppable advance. Even before the canonical recognition of her holiness and immediately after her death, she was considered by the faithful Christians, especially those of Coimbra, a most important intercessor with God. She had spent the last years of her life in this city where she decided to be buried. The beautiful tomb with her relics, the most tangible sign of the presence of the Holy Queen, turned into an important holy place of pilgrimage. This book studies the different dimensions of this phenomenon, from medieval to modern times: the theological implications of the cult of the relics, the study of the mendicant spirituality that inspired D. Isabel, the works of art, such as the Queen's first tomb, or the celebratory literature of her heroic figure, exploring the documental sources as well, which reveal the historical, social and political circumstances of the evolution of her cult at the Monastery of Santa Clara, the College of Arts, the University and in the city of Coimbra.

Comment l’imprimerie a-t-elle modifié la culture orale des pèlerinages, faite de cantiques chantés, de récits de miracles racontés et mimés ? Quand le fidèle sait lire, comment le livret transforme-t-il celui-ci, en étant un agent essentiel de la pastorale ? Dans quelle mesure l’imprimé tient-il compte de son auditoire ? Cet ouvrage se propose de répondre à ces questions. À partir d’une enquête sur 596 livrets concernant 216 sanctuaires sur trois siècles, les rapports entre imprimerie et culture sont examinés. Cet ouvrage se veut d’histoire totale, qui montre de manière transversale la production économique du livre, les intentions des auteurs, et la consommation/appropriation de l’objet. Le thème est aussi présenté de manière chronologique, par les livrets flamboyants (1480-1560), le temps des controverses (1560-1660), et le long temps de l’aventure individuelle (1660-1790). Le livret imprimé n’aura pas fait disparaître la démarche de pèlerinage très ancrée dans la culture des hommes, mais il aura réussi à la domestiquer.
